Symmetric subvarieties in compactifications and the Radon transform on Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type

We investigate the totally geodesic Radon transform which assigns a function to its integration over totally geodesic symmetric submanifolds in Riemannian symmetric spaces of noncompact type. Our main concern is focused on the injectivity and support theorem. Our approach is based on the projection slice theorem relating the totally geodesic Radon transform and the Fourier transforms on symmetric spaces. Our approach also uses the study of geometry concerned with the totally geodesic symmetric subvarieties in Riemannian symmetric spaces in terms of the cell structure of the Satake compactifications.     

A Flat Spectral Response AWG Demultiplexer Composed of Slabs with Islands and Peninsulas

Phase adjustment elements called islands and peninsulas are introduced to obtain an AWG demultiplexer with a flat spectral response. Use of the peninsulas enables us to achieve a 1dB bandwidth of 0.5 nm.     

Calorimetric study of molecular superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)<Subscript>2</Subscript>Ag(CN)<Subscript>2</Subscript>H<Subscript>2</Subscript>O which contains water in the anion layers

Thermodynamic investigation of an organic superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Ag(CN)₂H₂O in which the BEDT-TTF dimers are arranged in the κ-type structure in the donor layers is performed by the relaxation calorimetric technique at low temperatures and under magnetic fields. A thermal anomaly related to the superconductive phase transition was observed at 5 K. The existence of residual γ^* in the superconductive state is about 18% of the normal state γ value, which is larger than those of κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Cu(NCS)₂, and κ-(BEDT-TTF)₂Cu[N(CN)₂]Br salt. The lattice heat capacity reflected on the β-term in the low-temperature heat capacity was found to be affected by the cooling rate. The disorder produced in the network structure constructed by hydrogen bond in the insulating layer is considered to give low-energy phonon excitations reflected in the heat capacity.     

Crystallinity of bulk polyacetylene

The fine structure of bulk trans-polyacetylene (PA) was investigated by x-ray diffraction. The degree of crystallinity 0.81, determined by Ruland's method, was significantly higher than the value for linear polyethylene. The disorder parameter k was 5, which is much larger than the value for polyethylene. These results led us to propose that PA crystals are more disordered than PE crystals owing to the higher rigidity of PA chains. Small-angle x-ray diffraction indicated that the crystal morphology is of the extended-chain type rather than lamellar. All results obtained in this work showed that the fine structure of PA bulk is such as to facilitate electrical conduction of bulk PA.     

Freeze-dried cellulose acetate membrane fine structure observation

A freeze-dried cellulose acetate membrane fine structure was observed with an ultrathin sectioning electron microscope. The fine structure for the top surface in this membrane could be seen by lead citrate staining ultrathin sectioning. This network structure was observed among pores, which existed in porous substrate. The pore diameter in the top surface was about 50 Å, a value that agrees approximately with the value estimated by gas permeation.     

Epithermal neutron diffraction from a gadolinium alloy (Gd0.9Y0.1)

The coherent nuclear scattering amplitude of natural Gd was determined by epithermal neutron diffraction with neutron energy of 1.4 eV to be 1.4 ± 0.1 × 10^?12 cm.
